The family and friends of Wilson D. "Shag" Herbert are sad to announce his death on April 3, 2022.  Shag as everyone knew him by, was born January 30, 1925 in Bisbee, Arizona, to Melvin [Shag] and May Herbert.  He had an older brother George, a younger sister, Cleo Herbert Duthie [Joe], and a younger brother Richard.  He was born, raised and lived the majority of his life in Douglas.  He had just celebrated his 97th birthday in January of this year.  He attended Elementary, Jr. High, and High School in Douglas.  When World War II broke out he was drafted into the U.S. Navy, April 9, 1943.  Shag proudly served on the U.S.S. Belle Grove, an amphibious landing craft and served much time in the Philippines.  He graduated from the Landing Craft School, Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet, San Diego, California.  He was honorably discharged February 7, 1946, from the U.S. Naval Personnel Separation Center, at the Naval Base in San Pedro, California.  Shag was presented with the-Victory Medal WWII, Asiatic Pacific-1 Star, and Philippines Liberation-2 Stars.  Shag's rank was Motor Machinist Mate Second Class U.S.N.R.

After returning home, Shag had a variety of employment.  He worked for several years with the U.S. and Mexico governments as a cattle inspector on the Screw Worm Project which included trying to rid the terrible disease that was killing off so many of the cattle in both countries, in fact, he lived in Mexico City for a while during this period, also speaking fluent Spanish.  Shag also worked at Phelps Dodge for a while.  Another employment was working for several local service stations, Joe Good's and Joe Duthie's were 2 of them.  Around 1953, Shag and Jean Leachet Jackson, from Bisbee, were married.  Although there were no children born to this union, Jean brought 2 sons with her from her previous marriage to Mr. Jackson and she and Shag raised these children; Johnny and Bobby Jackson.

Shag also belonged to the Sunnyside Volunteer Fire Dept for many years.  One of the well-known self-businesses he had in his later years was. "W.D. Herbert's" Septic Cleaning Service.  Wilson "Shag" and Jean had many friends and family over the years and were well known in the community.  Shag was preceded in death by his parents Melvin (Shag) and May Herbert, two brothers, George (Evelyn) and Richard, brother-in-law Joe Duthie, and two stepsons, Johnny and Bobby Jackson.  Shag is survived by his sister, Cleo Mae Herbert Duthie, 95 years old, residing with her daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Larry Huish living in Pima, Az.  Funeral Services for Shag will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and American Legion Post 11.  A reception will follow at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
