Velia Torres Montes was born in Ezequiel Montes, Queretaro, Mexico January 1, 1931 to Raul Torres Saldierno and Inez Montes Telles. She was a devout and gifted lady of many talents. Her oil paintings, quilts and afghans won many blue ribbons, and her beautiful flower gardens were noted by people throughout the area. She was also a compassionate helper to people in need. She married Bernard H. (Bud) Brunner on June 6, 1957 in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, Mexico. She lived a full and rather adventurous life. She was chased by a moose in Wyoming, had bears leave their muddy paw prints on the side of the house next to the children's bedroom window in Northern New Mexico, and had her son sneak rattlesnakes into the kitchen and cook them in her frying pan in West Central New Mexico. She was bitten by a rattlesnake near Elfrida, Arizona, and hauled a gunshot victim out of the hills near Gleeson, Arizona. Velia passed away on May 8, 2014 at her home west of Elfrida, Surrounded by family after a long illness with Alzheimer's. She is survived by her sons James Bernard Brunner and Raul Torres Brunner, Daughters Mayra Perla Jackson, Velia Inez Graham and Alicia Maurine Smith, Sixteen Grandchildren, Seventeen great grandchildren and her husband Bernard Brunner. Friends are invited to contribute to the Alzheimer Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, New York City, New York 10001. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Elfrida. Burial will follow at the Whitewater Cemetery in Elfrida, Arizona.
