Robert Hugh Collett, affectionately known as Grumpy, was born January 4, 1931 in Douglas, Arizona to Clara and Eddie Collett. He was raised in Douglas and Elfrida and graduated from the first class of students at Valley Union High School in Elfrida. He met and married his 1st wife, Patricia Solomon, in 1952. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the LDS Salt Lake Temple. Grumpy served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. After finishing his service in the Air Force, he ended up back in southern Arizona where he worked various jobs before starting his career with KVOA television in Tucson, Arizona. He worked there as the RF Engineer, keeping the television signal coming to houses all over Southern Arizona for 30+ years. He was known to his coworkers as the Mountain Man. After the unexpected death of his 1st wife, he met and married Mildred Waits. Grumpy loved photography, and donated his time and talents to taking pictures for various high school sports events in Elfrida. Another passion of his was cooking. From 1992 until 2015 he, along with his brother, served local scout troops as their camp cook. Anyone that knew him knew that almost nothing held him down. He was always happiest when he was helping. He was often found serving around Elfrida, especially at the local food bank and schools. Grumpy passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on March 14, 2016 at the age of 85 after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, his children, Robert Jr., Mary Louise, and Jamielynn. He is survived by his children, Darleen Brook, Nina Hughes, David (Laura) Collett, Roger Collett, Karl (Holly) Collett, Sandy (Ashley) Matteson, Trish (Tim) Santiago, 23 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at the Valley Union High School Gymnasium in Elfrida, Arizona with burial to follow at the Whitewater Cemetery.
