Obituary

Richard William Schwab, Jr. passed away at Haven of Douglas on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. He was born in Clifton, Arizona on April 29, 1935, the son of Ruby Mineer Schwab and Richard William Schwab. The family relocated often because of his Dad's job, so Dick lived in many places around the state, including Globe where his brother was born, the San Carlos Indian Reservation, Prescott, Warren and Phoenix where he graduated from Phoenix Union High School. He worked for Norman Nurseries for many years until he and his Dad moved to Douglas. After his Dad passed away in 1982, he moved in with his sister Virginia and her family. He cared for his cat and the other cats and dogs. The yard was always beautiful. Dick visited with everyone in in the neighborhood and was aware of anything happening. He and George Herbert, who lived across the street, remained special friends. In 2008 he suffered a stroke that left him unable to walk so he became a resident of Haven of Douglas, where he lived until his death. He considered the Haven his home and enjoyed his caregivers and friends who visited, brought color books, markers, and treats. His friend, Sylvia Gutierrez visited him every week, and another friend, Beverly Sweazy who made two beautiful quilts for him. He really liked meal time and was first in line at the "restaurant." He colored posters and pictures and gave them to everyone. He missed his cat "Mandy" who was named after his niece Mandy. He was voted King of the Valentines Party at Haven. Dick was an ASU sports fan and had fun teasing the U of A fans. His nephew, Mike, kept him supplied with shirts and caps. We will be forever grateful for the compassionate and caring people who made Dick's time the past years and especially his final days so comfortable. He is survived by his brother, Robert (Dana) of Mesa, Sister Virginia Fitch of Douglas, Nieces, Cathy Grimes, Susan Fitch and Leslie Ray. Nephews: Gary and Robbie Schwab, and Michael and Stephen Fitch along with numerous great nieces, great nephews and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ruby Schwab and his brother-in-law, Thomas A. Fitch. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Brown Page Mortuary with Reverend Anthony Underwood officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers who will serve are Michael Fitch, Pablo Madrid, James Ray, Rob Johnson, Willie Stevens, and Omar Alvarez.
