Celebrating the Life of Raul Cadena Montaño

Raul Cadena Montaño, a man of immense work ethic, legendary generosity, and deep devotion to his family, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona. He was 91 years old. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by the children who were the pride and joy of his life.

A Legacy of Hard Work and Success

Born on January 4, 1935, in Tepache, Sonora, Mexico, to Ramon Montaño Davilla and Maria Rosario Cadena Marquez, Raul learned the value of labor early. After moving to Douglas, Arizona, he entered the construction industry. His natural leadership and skill saw him rise to the rank of foreman quickly—a position he held for 25 years. During this time, he didn't just build for others; he hand-built the lifelong family home that stands as a testament to his craftsmanship.

Raul was a born entrepreneur. Following his retirement from construction, he opened a second-hand store before partnering with his son to establish Bordermart and Border Express gas stations. His business acumen led to numerous successful ventures throughout his long and fruitful life.

Family and Faith

In 1958, shortly after arriving in Douglas, Raul married the love of his life, Mary Lou Silvas. Together, they built a vibrant life and a large, loving family. Though Mary Lou preceded him in death, the foundation they built together remained unshakable.

Raul's greatest joy was his family. He loved the simple pleasure of a family gathering, especially if it involved a carne asada or fresh seafood. He cherished vacations to Disneyland and Mexico City, creating memories that his children and grandchildren will carry forever.

The Hero of Tepache

Raul never forgot his roots. His return trips to his hometown of Tepache were legendary. As his truck rolled into town, residents would gather to cheer his arrival. He never arrived empty-handed, bringing a truckload of groceries and supplies for the community. These visits often culminated in a town-wide celebration, featuring mariachis and a feast, embodying Raul's spirit of radical "open-door" generosity.

A Man of Many Talents

Even in his "free" time, Raul was working. He was a fixture at local auctions, hunting for equipment, vehicles, and appliances. His grandchildren often watched in awe as he defied the laws of physics, packing an impossible amount of treasure into the back of his iconic green truck to take home for repair and resale.

Family Left to Cherish His Memory

Raul is survived by a large and devoted lineage, including his children:

• Rosa (Nayo), Thelma (Richard), Olga, Ramon (Gail), Raul (Marina), Nancy (David), Alecssa, and Josefina.

He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren who will miss their "Tata" dearly. Raul is reunited in eternal rest with his beloved wife, Mary Lou Montaño, and his son, Jimmy.

Friends and family are invited to honor Raul's life on February 2, 2026, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Douglas, Arizona.

• Interment: Following the mass at Calvary Cemetery.
