Ramon "Pelon" Hurtado Durazo, 72, entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, September 30, 2015, in his home surrounded by loved ones. Ramon was born February 7, 1943, the son of the late Ramon and Bertha Durazo. He married Yolanda Smith Durazo on April 27, 1963 and celebrated his 52nd wedding anniversary this year. He retired from the Douglas Unified School District. He worked at the Phelps Dodge Smelter in the 1980's after having been employed for many years by Thomas Refrigeration in Douglas where he met many of his lifetime friends. He served in the United States Army National Guard from 1961 to 1969. He was known as one of the best mechanics and classic car restorers in town and his home was well known for the best carne-asada family hangouts on the weekend. Pelon was very kind, friendly, humorous, and generously gave of his talent when a person was in need of car work, help with broken appliances, or anything in general. Together with his wife, he was god-father "nino" and compadre to many. Over his lifetime, he was active in car clubs, car shows, and car-racing as a racer and pit mechanic. Throughout the years, his cars and his work earned him many trophies and has left us with many wonderful memories. He is co-founder and member of Los Compadres Car Club in Douglas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ramon Ramirez Durazo; mother, Bertha Hurtado Durazo; grand-daughter, Kaylan Paige Olivas; sisters, Lupita Durazo and Olga Durazo.
He leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his loving and devoted wife, Yolanda Smith Durazo; daughters, Cindy Lou Ross, Sylvia Scruggs, and Clarissa Lorraine Escobedo; sons-in-law, Richard Ross, Ricky Scruggs, and Mario Escobedo; grand-children, Joel Anaya with wife Gillian Tieberg Anaya, Joshua Ross, Kianna Ross, Tyler Scruggs, Cristian "C.J." Ross, Katie Scruggs, Dominique Scruggs, and Roman Escobedo; brothers, Eduardo Durazo, Carlos "Chino" Durazo, and Robert "Tuti" Durazo; sisters, Patricia Durazo and Blanca Durazo; and hudreds of extended family and friends. A viewing will be held Friday, October 9th 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Brown Page Mortuary, 910 F Ave. Douglas, Arizona. A Rosary immediately followed by a Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 10th 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the morning at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 850 10th Street, Douglas, Arizona. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, 1501 E. 5th, Douglas, Arizona. Friends and family are encouraged to participate in the procession to the burial in their "show cars" as a tribute to his lifelong involvement and passion for cars.
