Ramon Contreras Castillo, 93, passed away peacefully in Mesa, AZ., on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, surrounded by many family members who shared their favorite memories.  Ramon was born on May 20, 1924, in Douglas, AZ to Ramon F. Castillo and Angelita C. Castillo. He was the fourth of ten children.  He was predeceased by his loving wife of 71 years, Enedina in June, 2017; his daughter Mary Magdalena and his granddaughter Louisa Cockrum, his parents and brothers Miguel, Arturo, Roberto, Rodolfo, Reymundo and Ricardo, his sisters, Celia and Mary Celia.  Ramon is survived by daughters, Magdalena (Ward Cockrum) Sedona, AZ; Veronica (Ralph Alvarado) San Tan Valley, AZ: Susan (Ernesto Figueroa) Queen Creek, AZ; Anna (Anthony Rabago) Glendale, AZ; and sons, Ramon (Vicky) Mesa, AZ; and David (Paula) Phoenix, AZ; brother, Ernesto Castillo (New Jersey); brother in law, Pete Alvarado (Lupita) Douglas, AZ and sister in laws, Carmen Ortiz (Douglas, AZ); Irene Castillo (Murray, Utah); Vera Castillo (Tucson, AZ) and Molly Castillo (CA). He loved each of his 20 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He shared his love through his amazing stories of adventures from his childhood filled with jokes and jesting, bringing laughter and memories for us to share for generations to come.  Ramon functioned as a gunner with the 357 ^th Coast Artillery Transport Detachment in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II. He was an oiler on the Liberty Ship traveling between Australia and the Philippines.  Ramon was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal; Philippines Liberation medal with two bronze stars; Army Good conduct medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; World War II Victory medal, American Campaign medal. Ramon served with the Arizona Army National Guard from1950 through 1984 retiring as Sergeant First Class.  After his military duty, he worked in the Douglas School District where he drove many players and band members to football games and performed maintenance throughout the district. He left to start his electrical business.  Ramon was a devout Catholic and would often be seen walking with his wife to early morning Mass while praying the rosary. He devoted many hours to visiting the sick in the Douglas area with his wife. Dad could often be found at St. Luke's or Loretto School fixing whatever needed to be repaired.  Services to celebrate his life will be at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Douglas, AZ., on Friday, December 22, starting with Rosary at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 10 a.m. Internment will be at the Veterans' Section of Calvary Cemetery.  The reception will be at the American Legion, 1325 G Avenue, following the internment.
