Ofelia Verdugo Varela (Peli) 91, longtime businesswoman, passed away peacefully at Haven of Douglas Arizona on January 27, 2023. She died at peace and surrounded by the love of her six children, and some of her grandchildren. She was a strong and empathetic woman, and lived her life to the fullest.

Ofelia was born February 23, 1931, in Douglas, AZ, to Rosario Lameda Verdugo and Ignacia Zamora Verdugo. She was preceded by her parents, her husband Albert (Beti), her daughter Lulu, her grandson Hector (Fats), and her longtime companion Ray Vargas.

She attended Loretto Catholic School, then graduated from Douglas High School in 1950. She was an avid reader (and kept the author Danielle Steel in business). She was an incredible and passionate cook, and her tamales were legendary. She loved sports and never missed an opportunity to attend her son's sporting events.  She was an avid gambler and regularly visited every casino between Douglas and Las Vegas. Her dining room table was more often set up for playing cards than for eating. She could beat anyone at Acey-deucey, and she loved spending time with her Canasta ladies.

Ofelia was devoted to her Catholic faith. She lived by principals of faith, love, acceptance, and generosity. She was one of the most caring individuals, and touched the hearts of those around her with sincere kindness. Once she welcomed you into her home, you became part of the family; much like Ana Luisa Cota Hill—who she loved as a daughter, and her best friend Evangelina Lopez.

Ofelia lived for her family. She leaves behind six children: Laura Montoya (Manny), Virginia Verdugo (Robbie), Albert Varela, Hector Varela (Corie), Luis Varela (Lorraine), Maria Christina Varela, her daughter in-law Gloria Varela, her son in-law Reynaldo (Nayo) Salazar, her sister Refugia (Pepa) Noriega, and many nieces and nephews. Nana Peli loved each of her 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at Brown Page Mortuary, 910 F Avenue, on Friday, February 3, 2023, from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 928 10th Street.

The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff at Haven of Douglas, They gave our mom all the love and care during her stay at their facility, words cannot express the gratitude that we all have for each and every one of them.
