Mercedes Campas Acosta passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at age 87, in her Douglas home. She died surrounded by the loving presence of her family.
She was born on December 28, 1935 in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. She was the oldest daughter to Manuel and Altagracia Campas (deceased). She was married to Manuel Acosta for 38 years, before his passing in 1995. She was also preceded by her brothers, Manuel and Ruben Campas, as well as her son, Armando, all of whom she joins in Paradise.
Mercedes leaves nine children: Norma Gutierrez, Jessie Phee (Jordan), Celina Williams, Dora Washington, Manuel Acosta (Alice), Ricardo Acosta (Gloria), Ramon Acosta, Sergio Acosta (Karrie) and Melissa Rodriguez (Robert). She also leaves behind 19 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mercedes is also survived by three siblings: Hector Campas, Rosa Estrella, and Heriberto Campas.
She was an avid sports fan, especially her love of baseball. A lifelong resident of the Douglas area, she was a near-permanent fixture at local games, where she supported her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and neighbors over the past six decades. Her favorite team was the Arizona Diamondbacks and she always went to a game when she visited the Phoenix area.
During her lifetime, Mercedes was a mother, grandmother, business owner, community supporter, singer, breast cancer survivor, and advocate for those in need around her. She will be remembered for her devotion to her Catholic faith. Mercedes left a long legacy of love, support and inspiration to her family, and to her communities of Douglas and Agua Prieta.
A viewing will be held at Brown Page Mortuary on January 12, 2023 from 2:00-7:00pm. A recitation of the Holy Rosary, immediately followed by a Mass of the Resurrection, will be held on January 13, 2023, starting at 10:15am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Calvary Cemetery. A reception at the Knights of Columbus will follow.
