LOUELLA BENSON
September 5, 1925- November 24, 2013
Lou was born in Cliff N.M. September 5, 1925 to Margaret Turman and Harry Leisering. She had a lot of interesting stories to tell about growing up along the Gila River. Times were different then, when everybody worked hard even the children. This was to become her legacy. Her father, a government trapper, was known to have "rubbed elbows" with the legendary mountain man Ben Lilly. After her school years in Cliff, she ended up in Silver City and then off to Las Cruces where she attended college.
She then moved to Douglas in the mid to late 1940's where she worked for Phelps Dodge. It was while in Douglas that she met her husband, Bonde Benson. They were married in 1950,and moved around a bit, from Douglas to Carlsbad and then to Grants N.M. They eventually settled back in Douglas where they raised their family.
Her immediate family survivors are her beloved sister Naomi, of Gila NM. and her four children: Douglas and Alice of McNeal, AZ, Robert and Star of Quemado, NM, Grant and Jeannine of Douglas, AZ and Barbara of Douglas, AZ.
She is also survived by many wonderful grandchildren: Alis, Ernie, Ashley and Isaac (Doug), Aaron and Aamie (Robert), Michael, Lindsey, and Kaitlyn (Grant). Great-grandchildren: Andrew, Ryan and Mia Rose (Alis and Scott); Antonio, Elijah, Israel and Asaia Grace (Ernie and Yadira). Her nieces are Naomi's children (Vera, Alice and Paulie). Nephews include her deceased sister Jeanne's children (Jimmy, Johnny, and Pete). She was also blessed to have so many good friends and acquaintances.
Lou was famous for her home cooking and canning abilities, quilting, sewing and gardening and like her husband was a straight shooter. Together they built a life based on honesty, integrity and love of family and friends. This will be their legacy.
Instead of a traditional funeral service, Mom requested that we have a get together for family and friends at the family home. Please feel free to stop by to visit and share memories at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, December 14th. You may call 364-5020 or 236-6020 for directions.
