Jose C Mejía Sr., 100, of Douglas, died peacefully in his sleep at his home early Saturday morning July 19, 2014. He leaves his wife of 75 years Socorro Felíx Mejía; son Manuel Mejía Sr. and wife Lupita Ibarra Mejía of Phoenix; daughter Lupita Mejía of Douglas; and daughter Minerva Mejía Kong of Douglas. He was preceded in death by his son, Joe Mejia Jr. in 2014, who died at the age of 56 and is survived by his wife Julie Elvick-Mejia. He is also survived by his grandchildren Manuel Mejía Jr. and wife Elisa Mejía of Phoenix (great grandchildren-Manny III and Anthony Mejía); Arnold Mejía and wife Bonnie Mejía of Phoenix (great grandchildren-Daniel and Max Mejía); Sergio Mejía and wife Yesenia Mejía of Phoenix (great grandchildren Sergio Jr, Izel, and Naiya Mejía); Adriana Kong Romero and husband Frank Romero of Tucson, Jessica F. Mejía of Tucson, Joey Mejía of Tucson, Maria Teresa Mejía of Tucson, and Benjamin Mejía of Tucson along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Born June 22, 1914 in Pirtleville, AZ, the son of the late Andrés and Valentina (Cruz) Mejía. He was the youngest of three children and was preceded in death by his sister Maria Lievanos and brother Eugene Jesus Mejía. He worked 47 years for Phelps Dodge Smelter, before retiring in 1976. During the time of the great depression, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served for five years. Long known for being an avid baseball fan, he played for the local Pirtleville Tigers as a pitcher and short stop. He played for many years in the annual Pirtleville Father's day game that was held at the Pirtleville Veteran's baseball field and was fondly referred to as "El juego de los de arriba vs. los de abajo". He will be fondly remembered for his strong work ethic, advocacy for education, mentoring youth, and love of family. A viewing will be held on Thursday July 24, 2014 from 3:00pm to 7:00pm at Brown Page Mortuary located at 910 F Ave, Douglas, AZ. Services will be held on Friday July 25, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Church located at 928 C Avenue, Douglas, AZ. There will be a rosary at 10:30 a.m. with the mass immediately following at 11:00 a.m. Pallbearers who will serve are Manuel Mejía Jr., Arnoldo Mejía, Sergio Mejía, José Lorenzo Mejía, Benjamin Andrés Mejía and Frank Romero.
