In Loving Memory of Hector D. "Flicka" Alvarado

A remarkable life filled with generosity, laughter, loyalty, and love.

Hector D. Alvarado, lovingly known by family and friends as "Flicka," passed away surrounded by the love of those whose lives he touched so deeply. Born in Douglas, Arizona, Flicka carried his hometown pride with him everywhere he went. No matter where life took him, Douglas was always home in his heart, and he warmly welcomed every DHS alumnus and hometown friend like family.

Flicka was known throughout Scottsdale and beyond as the owner of Flicka's Baja Bar & Cantina, where he built not only a successful business, but lifelong friendships and connections with people from every walk of life. Whether someone was well-known or simply passing through, Flicka treated everyone with the same kindness, respect, and warmth. He had a gift for making people feel seen, special, and valued.

He was the kind of man who never turned anyone away. If someone needed help, encouragement, support, or simply someone to listen, Flicka was always there first. He rooted for everyone's success and constantly encouraged people to become the best version of themselves. His kindness was never for recognition—it was simply who he was.

After retirement, Flicka found joy in helping others in everyday ways. He loved yard work, pool care, home projects, and lending a hand wherever it was needed. Many friends, neighbors, and family members were blessed by his generosity, often finding him showing up ready to help before they even had to ask.

Family was the center of Flicka's life. He deeply loved his parents, cherished his siblings, and maintained a special bond with each of them. He made sure to call often—sometimes several times a day—just to check in, share a story, laugh, or remind them they were loved. Though he had no children of his own, he loved his nieces, nephews, and their children as if they were his own, always offering guidance, support, humor, and unconditional love.

Flicka will also be remembered for his unforgettable stories—stories he proudly repeated time and time again, perhaps to make sure the lessons, laughter, and memories would never fade. His contagious smile, infectious laugh, humility, compassion, and generous spirit left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

His life was one of hard work, selflessness, and quiet goodness. He reminded us that greatness does not need to be loud to be powerful.

Although his absence leaves an immeasurable void, the love, wisdom, laughter, and memories he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was deeply loved, will be profoundly missed, and will never be forgotten.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcos and Barbara Alvarado.

He is survived by his siblings; Norma (Victor) Lopez, Marcos Ernesto Jr. (Sally) Alvarado, Elvia (Oscar) Flores, Gloria Moreno, Cecilia Alvarado, and Oscar (Norma) Alvarado, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A Rosary will be held on Saturday, May 30th at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Pallbearers who will serve are his nephews; Paul Chavez, Eric Chavez, Gerardo Flores, Alex Flores, Marcos Moreno, Javier Moreno, and Cesar Alvarado.

Honorary pallbearers are Victor Lopez, Johnny Calderon, Louie Montelongo, Sergio Davila, Raul Montaño Jr., Javier "Shorty" Fimbres, Manny Vasquez, Sam Cortez, George Frazier, and Craig Miller.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Flicka's legacy by contributing to a future scholarship for a Douglas High School Bulldog graduate. An annual memorial scholarship will be created in his name to support and inspire students from the hometown he was so proud to call home.
