Obituary

Mr. George Z. Reyes, a life-long Douglas resident, passed away recently in his sleep at the Arizona State Veterans Home in Tucson, Arizona. He was 94-years old, and popularly known as "Shorty." He was born on August 2, 1921 in Douglas to Juan L. Reyes and Antonia Z. Reyes. He is survived by his five children: George W. Reyes, Elaine S. Reyes, Gloria A. Gossett, Raul C. Reyes and John A. Reyes. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He graduated from Douglas High School in 1940. Shortly after Pearl Harbor was attacked, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, and fought from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant. After WW II ended, he returned to Douglas where he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a maintenance worker. He worked there until the mid-1960's when the Railroad downsized its operations. He then worked as a pipefitter for the Apache Powder Company until the 1980's, and then briefly worked as a pipefitter for the City of Douglas. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved sports. He ran track for the Douglas Bulldogs. He was well into his 70s when he quit playing recreational softball. He was a loyal fan of the University of Arizona Wildcats, and took his family to a number of football games during the 1970's. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was proud of his five children, and especially proud of the fact that all of them had at least one degree from the UA.
