Obituary

Elena de la Vara passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, April 3, 2018, at the age of 104 In Tucson where she had been living with her son, Ruben (Chato) and family for the past four years. She was born in Cananea, Sonora, Mexico on October 17, 1913. When she was still young her family moved to Agua Prieta, Sonora and later migrated to Douglas when she was 9 years old and attended school to the 8 th grade. She is preceded in death by her late husband of 65 years, Arnoldo, who passed away in December 29, 1998. She is also preceded in death by her oldest son, Eddie, three sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her sons Ruben de la Vara (Lydia) and Luis de la Vara (Lorraine), Rosa Molina (Manuel), 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.  Elena was a loving wife and mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend who was held in high esteem and will be missed by all who knew her. The focus of her life was her family and she did it with dedication and a great deal of love that was returned in kind. Two of her more memorable accomplishments were all the traveling she did to far off places when her husband retired. The other was the incredible amount of tamales she made all by herself every Christmas season for many years that she would give away as gifts, giving her great fulfillment in her later years. She also received great fulfillment when she became her husband's full time caregiver for an extended period of time when he was in his upper eighties and she lower eighties before he passed away. Funeral services will be held at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Douglas on Monday, April 16, 2018.  Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:00 am with a Holy Rosary being recited at 10:00 followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, followed by a reception and Celebration of Life about 12:30 pm at the American Legion.
