Obituary

Carlos (Charlie) Santamaria was called back home by our Lord on November 3, 2015. He is survived by his wife Ramona (Monie) Santamaria, his sister, Margot Santamaria Sherwood of Anchorage, Alaska and many nephews, nieces, and great nephews and nieces from many places in the United States. Sadly, Charlie passed away on his 59th wedding anniversary. Charlie was born in Douglas, Arizona on November 27, 1929 to Carlos and Aurora Santamaria. He moved to California with family as a young boy. He attended Banning High School and was in football and the high school chorus. He returned back to Douglas in 1948 and graduated from Douglas High School in 1949, where he participated in football and chorus. Charlie was drafted into the US Army and started active duty on January 26, 1951 through October 27, 1952. He served in the Korean War and received the Korean SVC Medal w/1 Bronze Camp Star-UN SCV, Occupation Metal (Japan), 1 o/s Bar. Charlie was a life member Legionnaire of the American Legion Fred Hilburn Post 11 and served as Commander of the Drum & Bugle Corp. He helped with bingo on Monday nights. He loved to sing and be around his friends at the Legion. Charlie worked at Market Spot, Post Office and 34 years at the Smelter until its closure in 1987. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Grace Methodist Church on 11th Street in Douglas. The interment will be at Calvary Cemetery following the church service. A reception will follow at the American Legion Post 11 in celebration of Charlie's life.
