After living life to the outmost of 97 years of age, Antonia Vargas Rodriguez has gone to live with her heavenly Father and her heavenly siblings.  Born August 16, 1920 in Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora to Francisco and Domitila Lugo, she is the last survivor of eleven children.  Toni worked many jobs to provide for her family.  She learned to sew on her own, making clothing for her family and friends.  She later worked at Vernon's Clothing Store and years later she worked at Phelps Dodge Mercantile in the ladies' department as a seamstress and sales clerk/cashier.  Upon the closing of Phelps Dodge Mercantile she retired but continued to sew at home.  Our mother was a very loving and caring person to all her family.  Her doors were always open for any family members or friends to spend a night or two.  We always enjoyed a full house.  Like any mother, she taught us how to iron, sew a button, mend a sock, cook and most of all, follow the tradition of making tamales for the holidays.  Our mother was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church and of outmost significance was mom accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.  She was preceded in death by her husband Ruben, grandson Humberto Escobar, Jr. and several nephews and nieces.  Mom leaves to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy four children, Erlinda Escobar, Priscilla (Robert) Smith, George Frank (Petra) Lopez and Virginia (Frank) Yanez.  She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.  Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church.  In lieu of flowers donation may be made in her memory to the First Presbyterian Church memorial fund.
